Booty Injections Getting Dangerous: Illegal Booty Shots Leaves Woman Limbless

Teased by family and friends about her flat backside, Apryl Michelle Brown had been very insecure.

Once Apryl had enough money, she told herself, she would buy herself a better one. Apryl said, "I didn't know if I wanted to look like Janet Jackson or J. Lo...I just wanted a new, bigger booty."

Unfortunately, her quest for curves costed her all her limbs and almost took her life away. In 2004, Apryl says she paid a "pumper," an unlicensed person, to inject silicone into her backside.

Brown can't recall how much she paid - maybe $500, maybe $1,000 - but over time, she says, the area became intensely irritated and painful, and her skin blackened. By early 2006 the silicone hardened, which caused severe pain and infection, ultimately requiring her to have amputation of her limbs.

Apryl told ESSENCE, "I was left here for a purpose... I have to get the word out so that nobody else makes this choice."
