To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of “8 Mile,” the 2002 made-in-Detroit movie starring Eminem, Vibe magazine caught up with the homegrown rapper and dedicated the cover of its October-November issue to a film it calls “a hip-hop movie masterpiece.”
Writer Jeff Rosenthal talks with Em and several of his costars — including Mekhi Phifer (who played Future, the character based on the late Detroit rapper Proof), Anthony Mackie, Evan Jones and Omar Benson Miller — about everything from the friendships that were made on the Motor City set (and at a Detroit Lions game!) to the caliber of Em’s acting. He also explores why “8 Mile” continues to resonate with fans.
“It was all brand new, and I’m so glad I had all of these guys around me,” Em says. “My hardest part was remembering the lines. ’Cause, really, all I had to do was take myself back into the mind frame of how I felt before I got signed with Dre. It wasn’t really too much to just be myself.”
