U.S. Customs officials report that they assisted law enforcement in Panama intercept more than 3,300 pounds of pure cocaine over the weekend. That's almost 2 tons of blow!
Officials report that a P-3 aircraft was patrolling the waters off of Panama City, Panama, on Saturday when the crew spotted a speedboat carrying four suspects, fuel barrels and multiple packages.
CBS 4 in Miami quoted aid Douglas Garner, Director of National Air Security Operations Center in Florida as saying, “This year, P-3 operations in Corpus Christi, Texas and Jacksonville, Florida assisted in either the seizure or disruption of more than 54,000 pounds of cocaine, which is more than $4 billion denied to transnational criminal organizations.”
The crew notified Panamanian law enforcement who directed three interceptors to the speedboat's location. Officers fired warning shots, causing the speedboat to stop. The suspected traffickers, all claiming Colombian citizenship, were arrested and their boat seized.
The fuel barrels were filled with cocaine, worth an estimated $242 million.
