Positivity?: Future Thinks People Should Appreciate Weezy's Emmett Till Line

Atlanta rapper Future doesn't get what the fuss is about over Lil Wayne's controversial line on his song "Karate Chop." The line referred to civil rights icon Emmett Till, who was beaten to death for flirting with a white woman.

Future believes that Weezy's mentioning it brought more awareness instead of ignorance.

He said on Big Boy's Neighborhood, "We did the song with great intentions. I never thought it was going to get so much attention. But I think, overall, with the whole situation, he did bring light, in a positive way, to what happened. Even though they might thought it was negative, he brought positive energy to the situation because a lot of people don't know, my dad didn't even know who Emmett was. He's thinking I'm talking about Emmitt Smith. He raised awareness to people who didn't even know what happened to him. After Lil Wayne brought light to it, they had to go and do their research."

And Another One: Mountain Dew Drops Lil Wayne Over Offensive Emmett Till Lyrics

Lil Wayne has been dropped by Mountain Dew for his offensive lyrics about Emmett Till in the song "Karate Chop" by Future, according to TMZ.

"Pop a lot of pain pills, 'bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels. Beat that p*ssy up like Emmett Till," rapped in the song, which leaked onto the internet in February.

The Till family, angered by the lyrics and lack of an apology recently said they would go after his endorsement deal with the company and urged fans not to attend his upcoming tour.  Wayne wrote a letter apologizing soon after the family announced it's intentions, but it was too little too late.  Airickca Gordon-Taylor -- Executive Director, Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and Till Family Representative said the family did not view Wayne's letter as a formal apology.

"While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,' this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned," Gordon-Taylor told TMZ.

Emmett was 14-years old when he was brutally murdered and thrown in a river in Mississippi by two white men after whistling at one of their wives.  Roy Bryant and .J. W. Milam were both acquitted of his murder.

Mountain Dew's parent company Pepsico issued a statement today stating that Wayne's “offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand.”

Shut Down: Emmett Till's Family Does Not Consider Lil Wayne's Letter An Apology

Lil Wayne's week isn't going to too well. Yesterday, before we knew he had been treated and released from the hospital for yet another seizure, the YMCMB rapper revealed a letter he wrote addressed to Emmett Till's family. Weezy acknowledges the hurt his now infamous "Beat the pu--y up like Emmett Till" lyric on Future's "Karate Chop (Remix)" caused, but the Till family, like many others, have noted that he falls short of an actual apology.

Reports TMZ:

Nowhere in the letter did Wayne say he was sorry for what he did.

Visit Now, Airickca Gordon-Taylor -- Executive Director, Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and Till Family Representative -- tells TMZ the family does not view the letter as a formal apology.

"While it's commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,' this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned."

We're reaching out to Lil Wayne for comment -- stay tuned.  It is the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation that has vowed to urge Wayne's business partners, like Mountain Dew which is a product of Pepsico, to drop the rapper if he doesn't properly apologize.

Looks like a phone call, instead of a letter, may be in order, too.
